Jammu, Dec 19: The Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) launched a rigorous crackdown on immigrants, specifically Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, residing illegally in various parts of the Jammu region. The operation involved procuring evidence to establish their Indian identity.
Addressing the press conference, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Anand Jain, said that more than ten First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against individuals aiding and abetting the illegal immigrants. These accomplices are accused of facilitating the stay of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis and helping them obtain Indian identity documents, including Aadhar cards, power bills, water bills, SIM cards, and more.
“Some aiders and abetters have already been taken into custody, and further arrests may follow as the investigation progresses,” said IGP Anand Jain.
Seven FIRs have been registered in Jammu District, with additional FIRs in Doda, Rajouri, Kishtwar, and Poonch Districts of the Jammu region, targeting both illegal immigrants and their collaborators. The charges include offenses under Section 420, 120-B, and forgery sections of the law.
During the day, the JKP conducted searches at over 30 locations across the Jammu region, leading to the recovery of incriminating materials such as passbooks, water and power bills, SIM cards, and mobile phones.
Responding to concerns about potential involvement of government officials, IGP Anand Jain assured, “We are investigating the recovered documents and looking into the possible role of government officials in this matter.”
The investigation is focused on uncovering the methods employed to generate and create documents claiming Indian nationality for these illegal immigrants.
IGP Anand Jain emphasised, “We are determined to identify the gang or group behind aiding the illegal immigrants to settle in J&K. The extent of involvement of government officials in procuring Indian documents is also a subject of serious investigation.”
