68th National School Games in Fencing: Subhanaya of J&K bags Sabre Individual Bronze; Haryana, Manipur, Maharashtra clinch Gold

Jammu, Nov 18: Displaying extraordinary skill and showing character and temperament when it mattered the most in the crunch situation, J&K’s gritty and gutsy Fencer, Subhanaya Sharma won Bronze medal to keep J&K’s Flag high at the national scene, while Manipur’s Pangambam Ambika Devi clinched Sabre Individual Gold, Maharashtra’s Janhvi bagged Epee Individual Gold and Haryana boys claimed Epee team event in the ongoing 68th National School Games in the discipline of Fencing U-17 Boys and Girls, being organised by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, under the auspices of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) at Gymnasium Hall, University of Jammu here.
This Fencing event is as part of the historic Series of nationals being hosted by Jammu and Kashmir, under the patronage of Minister for Sports, Satish Sharma; Secretary Youth Services and Sports, Sarmad Hafeez and under the chairmanship of Director General Youth Services and Sports, Rajinder Singh Tara.
Earlier, in U-17 Girls Sabre individual event, the Gold medal was bagged by Pangambam Ambika Devi of Manipur, the Silver medal was clinched by Anukriti Singh of Haryana, while the Bronze medal was claimed by Subhanaya Sharma of J&K and Antalya of Punjab.
In the U-17 Boys Epee team event, the Gold medal was bagged by Haryana’s quartet of Samar, Jayant Rounta, Prabhkaran Singh and Aryan Yadav, while the Silver medal in this event went to the Punjab fencers namely Sudarshan Singh, Parteek Sharma, Tanish Jindal and Prabhnoor Singh Sidhu. The Bronze medal in this event went to Telangana and the fencers included Nirugonda Varshith, Cherka Vignesh, Bandavath Sairam and Mohammad Asif and the 2nd Bronze medal was bagged by the fencers from Manipur including Konsam Dronel Singh, Shambanduram Zenith Meitei, Tontang Haijam and Nelsom Hidam.
The Gold medal in Girls Epee Individual was bagged by Janhvi of Maharashtra, while the Silver medal went to Adeeba of Telangana. The Bronze medals were bagged by Pavani of Karnataka and Siddhi Ben of Gujarat.
Dr Zaffar Iqbal, Treasury Officer Gandhi Nagar was the chief guest on the Prize Distribution function, while Advocate Supriya Chauhan was the guest of honour, who alongwith Sh Ved Prakash, Joint Director Youth Services and Sports Jammu present medals to all the winners.
The chief guest lavished praise on the organisers for holding the event in a most befitting manner.
“It has been learnt that around 4000 athletes are taking part in these month-long 68th National School Games in the disciplines of Judo, Fencing, Wushu and Football. So, the event is a historic one. Hats off to the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports,” Dr Zaffar maintained.
Former International Fencer and International Referee Rashid Ahmed Choudhary is the Competition Director, while former International Fencer and reputed Fencing Coach Ujjawal Gupta is the Competition Manager.
