Srinagar, May 30: In a spirited observance of World Environment Day, the Zonal Physical Education Office (ZPEO) Hardpanzoo organised a Plog Run and Cyclothon from Middle School Wachoo to Main Market Wachoo, blending fitness with environmental responsibility. The event aimed to promote awareness about environmental sustainability and the urgent need to combat plastic pollution.
The event was flagged off by Farooq Ahmad Sheikh, Incharge Activity, ZPEO Hardpanzoo, who lauded the initiative and highlighted the crucial role of youth in preserving the environment. Students from both government and private schools participated enthusiastically, collecting plastic waste along the route and setting an inspiring example of civic responsibility. World Environment Day, observed globally on June 5, serves as a call to action for individuals and communities to protect natural ecosystems. This year’s theme focused on the growing menace of plastic pollution — a serious environmental hazard that affects wildlife, contaminates water bodies, and threatens human health. Plastic waste, known for its long decomposition period, often breaks into microplastics that infiltrate food chains and ecosystems. The event highlighted practical steps like reducing single-use plastics, responsible recycling, and active participation in clean-up drives as effective measures to mitigate the problem. In his concluding remarks, Sheikh praised the energy and commitment of the participants and urged everyone to incorporate eco-friendly habits into their daily lives. He emphasised the vital role that young people play in driving sustainable change. The initiative by ZPEO Hardpanzoo not only raised environmental awareness but also underscored the importance of community engagement and youth leadership in building a greener, healthier future.
