Shopian, Aug 29: In a concerted effort to create a drug-free environment and safeguard the future of the younger generation, the Sub-Divisional Administration Zainapora, in collaboration with the local community and an NGO, has launched a massive drive against the cultivation of wild cannabis in the area.According to Bilal Ahmad, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Zainapora, the campaign aims to make Zainapora completely free from wild cannabis and other illicit substances. “Our objective is not only to eradicate wild cannabis but also to ensure a better and brighter future for our children,” he said. The administration has deployed around 20 cutters and teams spraying herbicides to control the wild cannabis growth in Safnagri, Manjuna, Melhora, Wachi, Darbagh, and other adjoining villages. The drive will continue until the area is completely free of wild cannabis cultivation.SDM Zainapora said that the importance of community participation is the campaign’s success. “We can only win this war against drugs when the community stands with us. We urge NGOs, locals, and volunteers to join us in this mission to eradicate the menace of drugs and provide opportunities for the youth to focus on constructive work.”As part of this initiative, the administration has also launched programs to promote agriculture and horticulture in the area. “We are working on introducing high-quality seed and mother orchard concepts to enhance crop yields and make cash crops more viable for local farmers,” said SDM Zainapora. “Our goal is to empower the local community with sustainable livelihood options and make them aware of the benefits and challenges of cash crop cultivation.”Through joint collaboration with local stakeholders, the administration has made significant progress in promoting alternative livelihoods and reducing dependence on illicit substances. The programs have not only helped in eradicating wild cannabis but also provided a boost to the local economy.Faizan Ahmad, a local resident and leader of the community NGO, said that there is need for social responsibility in addressing substance abuse. “The government alone cannot do everything; people need to take ownership and contribute to eradicating drugs, especially since they are mostly consumed by young people.”
