Srinagar, Nov 14: On world Diabetes Day, Kashmir Runners Club on Tuesday organized a run in collaboration with the Department of Endocrinology, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar with an aim to create awareness about the disease.
The run was organized from Bakshi Stadium via Rajbagh, Lal Chowk to Bakshi Stadium in which dozens of people including youth as well as children participated.
Dr Shahnawaz, a prominent Endocrinologist while talking to reporters said that the day is being observed across the globe on November 14 and this year International Diabetes Federation’s (IDF) slogan for this day is ‘Know your risk, Know your response’.
It is the time when the people should know what are the risks of diabetes and their responsibilities, he said, adding that there are 8 risk factors that are modifiable with the lifestyle even the previous history of diabetes can be modified.
“We have today organised a run to show the community that some of the factors can be modified through physical activities,” he said.
Dr Irfan Ahmad, a well-known Cardiologist from GMC, Srinagar, said that diabetes is a risk factor of heart attacks and 16% out of total heart attack cases are the outcome of the diabetes.
“Diabetes is a silent killer, thus the people need to walk or run for 30 minutes on a regular basis to fight the disease and save themselves from such a silent killer,” he said.
