Kargil, Aug 31: A tragic road accident early Sunday morning at Gumri in Drass area of Kargil district claimed the lives of two persons and left three others injured, including the driver.According to reports, a Xylo vehicle (registration number JK02BC 5894) travelling from Sonamarg towards Kargil went out of the driver’s control near Shaitani Nallah Morh at Gumri and plunged about 400 feet into the river. The impact proved fatal for two passengers—identified as Dil Mohammad, son of Noor Mohammad, a resident of Kramchi, Udhampur, and Inder Singh, son of Grain Singh, also from Udhampur—who died on the spot.The injured were identified as Sahil Bhatti, son of Panna Lal; driver Rahul Kumar; and Rehman Khan, son of Maqbool Hussain. They were rescued from the river by joint efforts of the Army and Police and later shifted to Sub-District Hospital, Drass for treatment.Police said that the Minamarg Police Post received information about the mishap at around 3:30 AM. “Our teams, along with Army personnel, rushed to the site immediately and managed to retrieve the bodies and rescue the injured,” an official said.Preliminary investigation suggests that overspeeding led to the accident. The Drass Police have registered a case under FIR No. 58/2025 under sections 281 and 225(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.
