Anantnag, Aug 14: Two people lost their lives and another was injured in a sand slide incident in the Gadhanjiipora area of Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday.
Nusrat Aziz, Tehsildar Bijhbera, told Rising Kashmir that the deceased have been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh (45), son of Ali Mohd Sheikh, a resident of Kaigam, and Mohd Altaf Khan (33), son of Mohd Sayed Khan, a resident of Rajouri.
She said that the injured individual was rushed to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for treatment. “The revenue team, including the Naib Tehsildar and other field staff, visited the site, submitted their report for further action, and expressed their condolences to the families,” she added.
According to Shabir Ahmad, a local resident, the victims were working at the base of a soil mound when it suddenly collapsed, burying them under the debris. “Locals immediately responded to the emergency by making a public announcement and rushing to the site. The location was away from the road, so no machinery could be brought in. The rescue operation was carried out manually, and the trapped individuals were eventually recovered from the debris,” he said.
Ahmad said that both Mushtaq and Mohd Altaf were found deceased on arrival at the hospital, while the injured individual was brought to the hospital and later referred to GMC Anantnag for treatment.
