Kargil, Aug 28: The 2025 edition of the Suru Summer Festival commenced in a remarkable way as Suru Valley experienced its first-ever snowfall in August, turning the long-awaited summer celebration into a breathtaking snow extravaganza. Union Minister for Parliamentary and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, who attended as the chief guest, expressed his wonder at the unusual weather, saying, “I had traveled here for the Suru Summer Festival, but nature had its own plans, blessing the valley with snowfall. Never in my life have I seen such heavy snow in August.”Rijiju, joined by Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor Kavender Gupta and senior officials, emphasised the government’s commitment to developing border areas, promoting youth opportunities, and boosting tourism. He unveiled new skill development programs and highlighted the role of key infrastructure projects, including the Zojila Tunnel and upgraded road networks, in enhancing the region’s tourism appeal. He also urged young people to actively engage in National Sports Day celebrations and the Khelo India initiative.The festival offered an exciting mix of adventure activities, cultural showcases, artisan exhibits, and traditional Ladakhi cuisine, celebrating the region’s rich heritage. The unanticipated snowfall added a magical touch, captivating visitors and locals alike, and firmly establishing Suru Valley as a must-visit destination on the global tourism stage.
