Ganderbal, Sept 12: Sonamarg, known for its picturesque beauty, is set to get a boost in horticultural development with the opening of a Sub Office of the Horticulture Department and the establishment of a nursery. This significant development was confirmed by chief horticulture officer Ganderbal Madan Lal in an exclusive conversation with Rising Kashmir.
Lal revealed that the sub-office will be housed in the horticulture hut of Sonamarg and will be the second such office in the region, complementing the existing sub-office in Kangan. The initiative is aimed at strengthening horticultural services in Sonamarg and its surrounding areas.
In addition to the sub-office, a small nursery will also be set up in Sonamarg. “The nursery will ensure that local residents have easy access to plants, eliminating the need to source them from outside. We will provide plants, including varieties of Akhrukht (walnut), which will also serve as a sell point for the department,” said Madan Lal.
The groundwork for this project is set to begin next week, following government instructions. This initiative is expected to benefit local horticulturists and residents by providing them with easier access to plants and resources, fostering growth in the region’s horticulture industry.
The project is seen as a step toward making Sonamarg self-reliant in terms of plant supply and encouraging local horticultural practices.
