Srinagar metro project delayed, awaits Centre’s nod: Govt

Revised DPR submitted, project stalled pending clearance from MoHUA

Srinagar, Mar 17:Srinagar, Mar 17: In response to a starred question by MLA Tanveer Sadiq in the Assembly, the Jammu and Kashmir government confirmed that the Srinagar Metro Rail Project has been de-layed and is currently awaiting approval from the Central Government.
The government clarified that the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Srinagar Me-trolite Project, estimated at ₹4,893 crore, was prepared by M/S RITES Ltd. and submitted to the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, for clearance. However, the project has yet to receive approval from the Ministry, leading to indefinite delays.
“The metro project is essential for addressing growing urban congestion and alleviating pressure on Srinagar’s existing infrastructure. However, without the Centre’s approval, the execution of the project remains on hold,” the government said in its reply.
The government further clarified that there have been no discussions with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) or any other firm regarding the execution of the project. As the project is still pending approval, no consultations on its technical or financial aspects have been initiated.
When asked about a revised completion timeline, the government was unable to provide a specif-ic date for the project’s execution. “Since the project is still under consideration, a clear timeline for its completion cannot be determined at this stage,” the government stated.
Originally, a Metro line similar to those in New Delhi and other major cities was proposed for Jammu and Srinagar. However, this plan was deemed unfeasible due to the congested roads and commercial and residential establishments along the proposed routes. Following further assess-ments, the Metrolite system was found to be a more suitable option.
As per the revised DPRs, the Jammu Metrolite will have two lines. Line 1 will connect Bantalab to Greater Kailash in Phase 1, with an extension to Bari Brahmana Railway Station in Phase 2. The line will feature elevated stations, with an interchange station at the Exhibition Ground. Line 2 will connect Udheywala to Exhibition Ground.
For the Srinagar Metrolite, two lines are planned as well. Line 1 will run from Indra Nagar to HMT Junction, covering 12.5 km, with an extension to Pampore Bus Stand in Phase 2. Line 2 will connect Hazuri Bagh to Osmanabad, covering another 12.5 km, and will be extended to Sri-nagar Airport in Phase 2.
