With Eid-ul-Fitr just around the corner, markets across Srinagar are abuzz with activity as people scramble to complete their festive shopping. Popular shopping hubs like Lal Chowk, Goni Khan, Residency Road, Jahangir Chowk, and Maharaja Bazaar are packed with eager shoppers picking up clothes, sweets, bakery items, and other essentials for the celebration.
The festive rush has provided a much-needed boost to local businesses, with shopkeepers and vendors reporting a significant increase in footfall and sales compared to previous years. “It’s refreshing to see such enthusiasm after the tough times we’ve had,” said Amir, a shopkeeper in Lal Chowk. Even roadside stalls selling accessories like bangles, henna, and artificial jewelry are experiencing brisk business.
Demand for traditional sweets and baked goods has surged, with bakeries along Residency Road and Lal Chowk witnessing long queues. Shoppers are stocking up on cakes, cookies, and other festive treats. “Sales have picked up remarkably in the last few days, and we expect the rush to continue until Eid,” said Imran, owner of a bakery chain.
Meat shops are also seeing a surge in demand, with customers stocking up on fresh mutton and chicken. “Meat shops are always busy before Eid, and this year is no different,” said Tariq Ahmed, a butcher in Hyderpora. “The demand for fresh mutton and chicken has soared, and we’re doing our best to keep up with the rush.”
Clothing stores are also thriving, particularly in areas like Goni Khan. Manzoor Ahmad Kar, spokesperson for the Goni Khan Traders Association (GKTA), said, “Eid has brought a lively atmosphere to the market, and it’s wonderful to see so many people shopping. Despite challenges like rising costs, people are still spending, which is a great boost for local businesses. We’re optimistic that this momentum will continue, driving both sales and economic growth in the region.”
Shoppers are also embracing the festive spirit. Ridha, a local shopper, said, “I love how the city transforms during Eid. Shopping for clothes, food, and accessories brings me right into the heart of the celebration. It’s a time to be with loved ones, and you can feel the excitement in every corner of the market.”
Suhail, a newlywed, said, “It’s our first Eid as a married couple, and the shopping experience feels even more special. We’re buying clothes, sweets, and gifts for our families. The crowds make it all the more exciting—this is truly what Eid feels like!”
Rouf, another shopper, commented, “The rush in the markets is overwhelming, but it’s great to see so many people out shopping. It makes the whole experience vibrant.”
With more shoppers expected in the coming days, shopkeepers remain hopeful that the festive rush will continue to boost sales, providing much-needed relief to businesses across the valley.
