Srinagar, Nov 29: Srinagar has been declared as the top performer district in agriculture and allied sectors in recently launched District Good Governance Index (DGGI) report in Jammu and Kashmir.
J&K is the first Union Territory to have such an index launched for 20 districts. The report has been prepared by Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) in partnership with the Union Territory’s administration.
As per the report, Srinagar has secured the first position in Agriculture and Allied Sectors, followed by Pulwama, Kulgam, Rajouri, Shopian, Samba, Reasi, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Ramban, Poonch, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Budgam, Doda, Jammu, Anantnag, Kathua, Bandipora, and Kupwara.
Under the index, the policies, schemes and programs of the central as well as the state governments have been monitored at the district level.
Suhail Inamullah, Technical Officer to Directorate of Agriculture Kashmir said agriculture and allied being primary sectors constitute considerably towards economic well-being of Jammu and Kashmir.
He said J&K has a district geographical outlook having two agro-climatic zones and each zone has its own particular climatic character that describes its cropping pattern, productivity, production etc.
“The production of food grains in the UT does not keep pace with the requirement, as the agriculture sector faces challenges on various fronts,” he said.
Acknowledging that agriculture and allied services greatly differ from region to region, he said an attempt has been made to follow proper sub-sector stratification.
Only generic indicators have been included to maintain parity and have a sense of cohesion while preparing and finalization of good governance index based on selected indicators.
“Eleven indicators have been identified under the Agriculture & Allied Sectors, focusing on output and institutional support like crop insurance, horticulture, milk, meat, poultry, crop production, etc.,” he said.
Notably, this is the second DGGI report which is aimed to assess the performance of governance in all 20 districts based on identified sectors and indicators so as to promote healthy competition among the districts.
