Sopore, Apr 13 : Authorities in north Kashmir's Sopore town on Monday ordered the closure of major educational institutions for three days following an alleged harassment case involving a girl student of a local higher secondary school, officials said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sopore, S A Raina, told that Classes at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Sopore, BHSS Sopore, and Government Degree College (GDC) Sopore will remain suspended from April 15 to April 18 in view of the prevailing situation.
He added that action has already been initiated against the lecturer involved in the incident.
Earlier, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) suspended Ghulam Hassan Mir, a senior lecturer in Urdu at GHSS Sopore, and attached him to BHSS Badugam in Gurez, Bandipora, pending an inquiry.
The Joint Director (North) has been appointed as the inquiry officer and directed to submit a report within 15 days, officials said.
Official sources confirmed that the action followed Sopore MLA Irshad Rasool Kar bringing the matter to the attention of Education Minister Sakina Itoo. The exact nature of the allegations against the lecturer could not be immediately ascertained.
Meanwhile, the overall situation remained peaceful in the town. Students who had earlier protested against the alleged incident ended their demonstration without any further trouble, officials added. (KNS)
