Ganderbal, Feb 08: The Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) has granted official approval for snow bike operations in designated zones of the scenic tourist destination, marking a major boost for winter tourism in the region. The move is expected to attract adventure enthusiasts and contribute to the local economy.
The SDA, responsible for tourism development in Sonamarg, has set forth strict regulations for snow bike operations. Enthusiasts have secured permits after completing the necessary registration process and paying a fee of ₹75,000 per bike. The permission is valid for the current winter season, depending on snowfall conditions, and is renewable for future seasons.
To ensure safety and environmental sustainability, the SDA has issued comprehensive guidelines. Only physically and mentally fit individuals will be allowed to operate or ride the snow bikes, and technical staff must be present during operations. The use of polythene remains strictly prohibited, and operators must install pollution control safeguard kits on all snow bikes.
Operations will be closely monitored by the SDA in collaboration with local tourist police, ensuring compliance with approved routes and safety measures. Each snow bike must display its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) clearly, and any violations—such as operating without a valid registration token—will result in fines and further legal action.
Reliable sources confirm that over 50 individuals have already received permission for snow bike operations, though the final selection of designated areas is still pending. However, the Department of Wildlife has clarified that snow bike operations will not be allowed in wildlife zones, warning of legal action for any violations.
The SDA also retains the right to revoke any permission at any time without providing a reason, the Permission reads.
With this initiative, Sonamarg is set to enhance its appeal as a premier winter tourism destination, drawing more visitors and boosting local businesses.
