Srinagar, Dec 05: The Division of Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry, Faculty of Agriculture, SKUAST-K inaugurated a six-week skill training programme aimed at equipping unemployed youth with entrepreneurial skills to establish mini soil-testing laboratories. The event, sponsored by the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME), was held at the Faculty of Agriculture, Wadura, and was attended by aspiring entrepreneurs, agricultural experts, and faculty members.
In her inaugural address, Prof Raihana Habib Kanth, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, encouraged the participants to explore entrepreneurship opportunities. “Mini soil testing labs can play a crucial role in balanced nutrient application, reducing cultivation input costs, and supporting site-specific nutrient management,” she said.
Prof Kanth highlighted the broader benefits of soil testing, which include improved soil health, better human health, and positive environmental impacts.
Prof Javid Ahmad Bhat, Head of the Division of Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry, welcomed the participants and stressed that the training programme would produce skilled professionals capable of establishing and managing soil testing labs. “Such initiatives would contribute to sustainable agricultural practices in the region by providing farmers with vital information to improve soil fertility and crop productivity,” he said.
Dr Inayat Mustafa Khan, the Training Organiser, provided an overview of the programme, outlining its primary objective of delivering doorstep soil and plant analysis services to farmers. “The initiative would empower the participants with practical skills and knowledge, bridging the gap between advanced agricultural practices and local farming needs,” he said.
The training programme is seen as a significant step towards fostering entrepreneurship and promoting sustainable farming in the region, the SKUAST-K said in a press release, adding that it aligns with the vision of modernizing agriculture while simultaneously supporting the livelihoods of unemployed youth in Kashmir.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof M.H. Chesti, who expressed gratitude to all the participants and stakeholders for their support in making the initiative a success.
