Srinagar, May 30: In a bid to enhance safety measures, the Jammu and Kashmir government has mandated the use of ‘life-saving jackets’ for Shikara boats operating in Dal and Nigeen lakes, as well as other water bodies in the region.
This decision follows recent incidents where tourists had to be rescued by river police in Dal Lake due to strong gusty winds over a span of two days. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the rescue operations.
Authorities have taken strong note of the negligence displayed by Shikara owners and have issued strict instructions for them to wear safety gear. Failure to comply with these regulations will result in the cancellation of their registration.
The government’s order states, “To ensure the safety of tourists taking Shikara rides in Dal and Nigeen Lakes, as well as other water bodies, and to prevent any untoward incidents due to inclement weather or other reasons, it is hereby mandated, as per the J&K Tourism Policy guidelines, that every Shikara boat registered under the J&K Tourist Trade Act, 1978, must be equipped with a minimum of three recommended, high-quality, and specified life-saving jackets at all times. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in the cancellation of registration under the said Act.”
This new regulation highlights the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring tourist safety and aims to prevent any unfortunate incidents on the lakes and water bodies of Jammu and Kashmir. Shikara owners are strongly urged to promptly adhere to these guidelines to prioritize the well-being of tourists and safeguard the integrity of their businesses.
