Srinagar, Feb 24: A national seminar on “Environmental Ethics and Traditional Knowledge” was held at Abdul Ahad Azad Memorial Degree College, Bemina, Srinagar on Monday that brought together leading academics, environmentalists and students to explore ethical responsibilities towards the environment.
The seminar, sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) North Western Re-gional Centre, Punjab University, focused on sustainability, conservation, climate change, and the ethical treatment of ecosystems. In her welcome address, Principal Prof (Dr) Mudasir Afshan high-lighted the significance of indigenous wisdom in shaping a sustainable future. “Themes like these are the need of the hour, guiding us towards a better world,” she remarked.
Delivering presidential remarks via video link, Shantmanu, Financial Commissioner (Additional Chief Secretary), Higher Education Department, underscored the relevance of ancient texts in modern en-vironmental policies. He was joined by Dr Sheikh Aijaz Bashir, Director Colleges J&K, who congratu-lated the college for hosting the event.
Speaking at the seminar, Prof (Dr) Syed Wilayat Hussain Rizvi, Registrar of Cluster University Srinagar, stressed the importance of a balanced human-nature relationship, describing it as essential to the very fabric of existence. The keynote speech was delivered by Prof Farooq Ahmad Lone, from the Division of Environmental Sciences, SKUAST Srinagar, who warned of the destructive impact of hu-man activity on nature. Quoting religious scriptures, he urged a more responsible approach to envi-ronmental conservation. The event saw participation from distinguished academics, including–Prof (Dr) Yasmeen Farooq, Principal, Women’s College MA Road, Srinagar, Prof Farooq Ahmad Mir, Prin-cipal, Sri Pratap College, Srinagar. Prof Aijaz Ahmad Hakak, Principal, Amar Singh College, Srinagar and Prof Khurshid Ahmad Mir, Controller of Examinations, Cluster University Srinagar.
Several scholars, including Dr Mohammad Maroof Shah, are scheduled to present their research dur-ing technical sessions. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr Mudasir Ahmad Tan-tray, Head of the Department of Philosophy and Convenor of the seminar, while Dr Taiba Musadiq Sahaf conducted the proceedings.
