Kishtwar, Dec 03: With the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy snowfall in the coming weeks, Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, a former J&K minister, has raised concerns about the preparedness of the government to tackle the impending challenges of the harsh winter.
Saroori has made a fervent appeal to the administration to ensure the stocking of essential commodities, including kerosene oil, LPG, medicines, and ration, particularly in the erstwhile Doda district, to mitigate the hardships of the people.
During his visit to various parts of Kishtwar district, Saroori interacted with residents who expressed their grievances over the inadequate availability of ration and firewood in several villages. According to Saroori, locals in remote areas are finding it increasingly difficult to sustain themselves as winter has already set in. “The unavailability of permissions for felling dry trees, which could have been a source of firewood, has exacerbated their struggles,” he said.
“The situation is dire in many villages, where people are facing a severe shortage of essential supplies. There is an immediate need for the administration to take stock of the situation and ensure timely delivery of resources,” Saroori said, adding that the dearth of ration, coupled with the absence of firewood, is causing significant distress in these regions.
The former minister urged the government to preemptively stockpile firewood and ration in the districts before snowfall cuts off access to remote areas.
Highlighting the resilience of the people in these regions, he said, “The residents are ready to endure the challenges of winter, but the administration must step up to provide them with the basic necessities to survive. Ensuring adequate supplies of essential commodities is not just a necessity but a duty of the government to safeguard the well-being of the people in these difficult times.”
