Srinagar, Sept 09: National Conference (NC) General Secretary and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Khanyar, Ali Muhammad Sagar on Tuesday vehemently condemned the detention of MLA Doda West, Mehraj Din Malik, under the draconian Public Safety Act (PSA), calling it an “unwarranted action that undermines democratic ideals”.
In a statement issued from the party’s Nawa-e-Subha headquarters, Sagar decried the detention as an outright violation of democratic principles in the region. He said MLA Malik posed no threat to public order, denouncing the use of the PSA as an abuse of power.
“The arrest of an elected representative, with no legitimate grounds, is both unjust and deeply alarming,” Sagar said. “When an elected official can be detained under such an oppressive law, it sends a dangerous signal to the people, eroding their confidence in the democratic framework.”
The NC leader raised concerns about the LG government’s intentions, saying, “The overreach of an unelected administration against a people’s representative threatens to destabilise public trust in democracy.”
“This is not just an assault on an individual, but a direct attack on the very essence of democratic values in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, demanding an immediate revocation of the PSA order.
