Srinagar, Apr 08: Prof (Dr) Iqbal Saleem Mir, Head Department of Minimal Excess and General Surgery Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, has been elected as the Chairman (President) of J&K State Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India (JAKASI).
He has been elected unopposed in the recently conducted election as the president for the year 2024-25 along with Prof Aijaz Rather who was elected as vice president and other executive members from the respective colleges.
The declaration came through a notification issued by the J&K State Chapter of ASI (JAKASI), confirming Prof Iqbal’s elevation to the prestigious position.
This is the first time that the Head Department of Minimal Excess and General Surgery GMC Srinagar has been elected to the post of president for J&K and Ladakh.
Prof Iqbal is a pioneer of laparoscopic surgery in Kashmir and has extensive experience of more than 25 years in the field of minimal excess surgery. He did MBBS and MS from GMC Srinagar and later went for a fellowship at the prestigious Indraprastha Hospital.
Prof Mir said he is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and democratic organisation that bridges any existing gaps within our surgical community.
His vision for the chapter revolves around bolstering surgical sciences across both central and peripheral organisations. “I want to provide opportunities for surgeons at all levels to enhance their skills and contribute to surgical practices,” he said.
Having earned recognition as a leading laparoscopic surgeon, Prof Iqbal has significantly contributed to various surgical specialities. His proficiency and remarkable outcomes in complex surgeries have earned him widespread admiration among colleagues and patients.
He has also served as operating faculty for esteemed national organizations such as IAGES, SELSI, and JKASI. His expertise spans a wide range of laparoscopic procedures, including cholecystectomy, CBD exploration, complex hernia repairs, hydatid cyst management, and stomach and colon cancer surgery. He is a pioneer in laparoscopic bariatric surgeries and pancreatic surgeries.
The surgical faculty expressed happiness over Prof Iqbal ascending the chair of president JAKASI. He will be taking over from Prof Sanjay at JAKASI 2024 to be held in GMC Jammu.
