Jammu:- Jammu Parcel Office of Northern Railway has successfully booked and dispatched a consignment to Bengaluru under the newly introduced Parcel Transshipment Policy of the Railway Board, marking a significant step towards modernising freight and logistics services in the region.
Officials said around 240 kilograms of iron material was dispatched from Jammu to Bengaluru City under the new policy, which allows seamless transshipment of parcels through connecting trains and leased parcel vans at notified junction stations.
Earlier, transshipment of parcels at intermediate stations was not permitted, causing delays whenever direct train connectivity to destinations was unavailable. Under the revised policy, parcels can now be unloaded from one train and loaded onto another, ensuring uninterrupted and faster transportation to the final destination.
Railway officials said the policy is expected to greatly benefit traders, farmers and e-commerce companies by reducing transit delays and logistics costs. Instead of paying separate freight charges for different routes, consignors will now receive a single Parcel Way-Bill calculated on the total distance between the originating and destination stations.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal described the initiative as a “game-changer” for traders and farmers of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Earlier, due to lack of direct connectivity, fruits, vegetables and other perishable goods could not reach markets on time. With transshipment now allowed, rail transport has become cheaper, safer and faster compared to road transport,” he said.
Officials added that the 10 parcels dispatched from Jammu on Wednesday were processed under the streamlined system introduced through the new policy.
