Srinagar, Dec 10: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that the party will continue to spearhead the peaceful struggle for the “restoration” of the constitutional rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He said while addressing a workers convention in Rafiabad, Baramulla. Even before the Supreme Court decision on Article 370, party Vice President Omar Abdullah expressed anger against the alleged harassment and intimidation of National Conference leaders and office bearers.
“The Supreme Court has not passed a verdict yet. How do you know what the verdict is? Maybe it is in our favour. Then what is the need to call my party colleagues to police stations? They have been called to police stations since Saturday night and threatened. They are being told that they should not write this or that on social media. Are these threats only for the NC? Tell me whether you have called a BJP leader. What is wrong with it? Don’t we have a right to say this in a democracy? Can’t we raise objections in a democracy? If others can talk, why not us?” Omar alleged.
The former chief minister in his address said, “The Supreme Court will give a decision tomorrow, but is it necessary to shut us down? Is it necessary to cancel our program? Have we ever damaged the environment? Have we ever told the youth to pick up and throw stones? Have we ever told youth here to pick up a gun and fight? Our President Dr. Farooq Abdullah gave a speech at Hazratbal at that time and said, “Youth, if you don’t like Farooq Abdullah, I will leave, but don’t pick up this gun. Since then, 35 years have passed and his words have been proven right time and again. The gun has given nothing but destruction and destruction.”
The NC Vice President added, “We went to the Supreme Court and except for a few other parties, all others reached SC and all tried together. “Let’s assume for two minutes that if the Supreme Court’s decision is not in our favour, it does not mean that we will give up our fight. It took 70 years for BJP to reach August 05, 2019. Before that, the Supreme Court gave two judgments which were in favour of Article 370, did the BJP people leave their position, or did they back down? Rather, they continued their political fight. It means that we will not lose heart, we will not be disappointed. We will peacefully, democratically and legally get our rights back. We will continue to fight for what was taken away from us.”

In Pulwama, Azad promises ‘Khushhaal Jammu Kashmir’ Pulwama, Aug 27: Chairman Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said that given the huge potential in horticulture and agriculture sectors, Pulwama will be developed as a major economic centre once DPAP is elected to power in Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing a public rally here despite the onset of the fruit harvesting season, Azad assured the people that the world-class fruit mandis encompassing all facilities would be established in order to give a boost to the horticulture sector in Pulwama. “The fruit mandis will have the latest technology, speedy transport system to ferry apple crop to mandis across the country, loan facilities and extensive support to boost fruit production,” he said. Eulogising his belief in “Old Kashmir” which saw “all-round development” 15 years ago when he was chief minister, he lamented the model of “New Kashmir” where people are “unhappy due to record unemployment of both boys and girls, poor infrastructure and economic stagnation which has led to poverty in rural Jammu and Kashmir”. Azad said that the DPAP model of governance encompasses equal employment for educated girls as well as boys in my idea of ‘Khushaal Jammu Kashmir’ which would also guarantee jobs, roads, electricity, mobile connectivity and financial stability. “Also, skilled and unskilled workers will have opportunities by utilising the full potential of the region,” he added. Stressing that DPAP’s manifesto will include double and triple shifts to revamp the poor infrastructure, the former chief minister said the region will be promoted during fruit seasons for tourism. “Tourist spots like Shadimarg, Gulshanmarg and other beautiful meadows will be developed at par with Gulmarg and for that tourism-related infrastructure will be developed and jobs will be guaranteed for the youth of the same districts. Schools and hospitals will be upgraded at the earliest,” he envisioned. Lamenting over the distribution and use of adulterated pesticides which had a devastating impact on fruit growers, Azad cautioned people to remain vigilant and compared the situation with Himachal Pradesh where the government has one remarkable work to curb the use of adulterated pesticides or fungicides.
