Ganderbal, Feb 21: In a decisive move to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) Friday conducted an extensive surprise checking operation in Ganderbal, leading to the seizure of 11 vehicles due to a lack of valid documentation.
The crackdown is part of a broader initiative to ensure compliance with traffic laws and reduce road accidents caused by negligence and regulatory violations. Leading the operation, MVD Inspector Manzoor Qureshi reaffirmed the department’s firm commitment to enforcing the law without exception. “We are acting on clear directives from the J&K Transport Commissioner to uphold MVD rules strictly. Any vehicle found operating without valid documentation will not only be fined but will also be seized on the spot,” he said.
The official further stressed that enforcement efforts were being intensified to instil a sense of responsibility among motorists. “Road safety is a shared responsibility. If vehicle owners fail to adhere to regulations, they put their own lives and those of others at risk,” Qureshi said, adding that regular enforcement drives would continue in the future to maintain strict compliance.
As part of the initiative, the MVD is also focusing on eliminating the dangerous practice of underage driving. Qureshi issued a stern warning to parents, urging them to ensure that their minor children do not drive vehicles. “Our primary goal is public safety. We have launched a rigorous campaign against underage driving, and we are pleased to report that there are no longer any minor drivers on the roads. This is a major achievement for us,” he stated.
He emphasised that underage driving poses a significant risk, not only to the young drivers themselves but also to other road users. “Parents must understand that allowing their children to drive without a licence is not only illegal but extremely dangerous. It is our collective duty to prevent accidents and safeguard lives,” he added.
In addition to addressing underage driving, the MVD is taking a strict stance on documentation compliance. Qureshi made it clear that the seized vehicles would not be returned to their owners until they produced complete and up-to-date documentation. “Our message is simple – obey the rules to protect lives. Every vehicle must have valid registration, insurance, and roadworthiness certificates,” he said.
Authorities have also warned that repeated offenders will face harsher penalties, including extended seizures and legal action. “We are committed to making the roads of Ganderbal safer for all, and anyone violating the law will face strict consequences,” Qureshi asserted. The MVD has vowed to continue its rigorous enforcement measures, aiming to instil a culture of road discipline and accountability among motorists. This latest operation serves as a strong warning to vehicle owners that compliance with traffic laws is non-negotiable.
In addition to enforcement, the department is also working on awareness initiatives to educate the public about the importance of road safety and legal compliance. Qureshi highlighted that workshops and awareness campaigns would be organised to ensure that both drivers and pedestrians understand their responsibilities. With an increase in vehicular movement in Ganderbal and surrounding areas, the authorities stress that stringent enforcement is necessary to prevent traffic congestion and reduce the risk of accidents.
