Jammu, Jun 20: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ramgarh, Dr Devinder Kumar Manyal on Friday inaugurated a new Handloom Weaving Training Centre in Karawali, established under the Department of Handloom Development. The event was part of an awareness camp and workshop aimed at promoting skill development and self-reliance among local artisans.
During the inauguration, Dr Manyal emphasised the importance of preserving traditional crafts and empowering rural women through skill-based training. He commended the department’s efforts in creating employment opportunities and strengthening local livelihoods.
DDC Member Ramgarh, Sarbjeet Singh Johal, highlighted the need to raise awareness and encourage participation in government handloom schemes, which can serve as a sustainable livelihood source, especially in border areas like Ramgarh.
Ms Niharika (JKAS), Assistant Director, Handloom Samba, said the training centre will provide structured skill development, design innovation, and technical training to local weavers, with a special focus on women. She announced plans to establish more such centres across other rural regions of Samba.
BDO Ramgarh, Neha Choudhary (JKAS), stressed the importance of inter-departmental cooperation and urged youth to explore careers in handloom and handicrafts through government schemes.
Prominent attendees included former BDC Chairman Darshan Singh, Mandal President Nancy Choudhary, former Sarpanch Bharat Bhushan, and former Panches Babu Ram, Binder Singh, and Tilak Thappa, who expressed their support for expanding such initiatives.
The event featured a live demonstration and interactive session with local artisans, receiving positive feedback from participants and further inspiring community engagement.
