Pulwama, Aug 02: Various self help group (SHG) members registered with National Livelihood Mission (NRLM) have started making handcrafted Diyas and Kalash pots to observe “Meri Mati Mera Desh (My Clay, My Country)” campaign.
Officials from JKRLM said the campaign is a nationwide “Jan Bhagidari” initiative to commemorate the 75 years of India’s independence. They said the initiative provided an opportunity for SHG women to promote traditional art forms and encourage the use of eco-friendly and indigenous products.
“The SHG artisans from various rural areas of Pulwama district have been meticulously crafting Diyas and Kalash pots using local clay and natural colours. Their skillful hands and creative minds have brought forth an exquisite range of hands painted designs, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region,” the officials said.
Shabnam Khan, a JKRLM SHG member, said they are immensely proud to be a part of ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh’ campaign. She said this initiative has provided them with an opportunity to showcase their traditional craftsmanship. “This campaign is helping us to preserve our culture and traditional art forms,” she said.
District Programme Manager, NRLM, Pulwama Arsheed Ahmad said the initiative not only empowers the rural artisans economically but also encourages them to revive and pass down their traditional skills to the younger generation.
Many of the SHG members have been crafting these beautiful clay artifacts for generations, and the campaign has provided them with a chance to share their expertise with others, the official said.
The officials said the campaign has garnered immense support from the local community and has gained popularity across the district. “The beautifully designed Diyas and Kalash pots are in high demand as they perfectly blend traditional aesthetics with environmental consciousness,” Arsheed said.
