Kulgam, Jan 21: Fehmeeda Begum, a 65-year-old woman from Gudder village in Kulgam, passed away in a hospital on Tuesday due to asphyxiation, 17 days after her son died from the same cause.

The tragedy unfolded when Fehmeeda and her son, Nisar Ahmad Khan (24), were found unconscious in their home after keeping a charcoal heater on overnight in a poorly ventilated room.

According to locals, the duo was rushed to District Hospital Kulgam, then to GMC Anantnag, and eventually shifted to SKIMS Srinagar for critical care. While Nisar succumbed on January 4, Fehmeeda remained in the ICU until her passing on Tuesday morning.

Yawar Ahmad, the lumberdar of Gudder village, said the heartbreaking incident has left the family shattered, with only one surviving son.

Experts continue to warn against the dangers of using heating devices in closed spaces, urging people to ensure proper ventilation and adopt safe practices to avoid such preventable tragedies.
