Budgam, July 28: Bashir Ahmad Bhat, popularly known by his stage name Bashir Kotur, a legendary figure in Kashmir’s comedy and folk theatre scene, passed away at his residence in Hanjigund village of Chadoora tehsil on Monday. He was 65.Bashir had been battling multiple health complications for several years and was recently admitted to the ICU in critical condition. Despite a brief recovery and discharge on Saturday, his health deteriorated again, leading to his untimely demise just a day later. A towering presence on stage and a household name in Kashmiri entertainment, Kotur was known for his unique comedic flair and deep connection with audiences across generations. His passing has left a deep void in Kashmir’s cultural landscape. Noor Ahmad Bhat, a local resident, told Rising Kashmir, “He had been unwell for the past four years. Despite his illness, he remained the only breadwinner for his family. His death is not only a loss to his loved ones but to the entire community that found joy through his performances.” Bashir Kotur was laid to rest in his native village of Hanjigund, with people from across the Valley attending his funeral prayers. He is survived by his wife and two young children.“The whole village is in shock. We have lost someone who made us laugh even in our darkest times,” Noor Ahmad added. Tributes have poured in from fellow artists, cultural institutions, and fans across the region, many of whom hailed Kotur as a symbol of Kashmir’s vibrant folk tradition and humour.
