Jammu, March 22: The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages (JKAACL) organised a book launch event for Basant Geet Tawi Da, authored by O.P. Sharma Vidhyarthi, at K.L. Saigal Hall, Jammu. The event coincided with World Water Day, highlighting the book’s focus on the ecological preservation of the Tawi River.
The book was unveiled by Ramesh Kumar, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, in the presence of S.P. Vaid, former DGP J&K, Chander Mohan Sharma, and Dr Mrinalini Atray, Secretary General ICICH. Addressing an esteemed gathering of writers, poets, and forest officers, Ramesh Kumar praised the literary work for its insightful reflection on environmental conservation. He emphasised the importance of sustainable consumption and production, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In his presidential address, Shesh Paul Vaid, former DGP J&K, recited verses from the book and underscored the need to translate literary awareness into action, advocating for afforestation initiatives along the sacred Tawi River to combat increasing pollution.
Author O.P. Sharma Vidhyarthi, known for his Tree Talk campaign, captivated the audience with his recitation of Dogri and Hindi poems, focusing on themes such as glacial retreat, deforestation, pollution, and the beauty of springtime forests. Dr Mrinalini Atray reflected on the evolution of Tawi poetry, linking it to heritage conservation efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr Ashok Khajuria presented an in-depth analysis of the book’s literary, cultural, and environmental significance, noting its bilingual nature in Dogri and Hindi.
Chander Mohan Sharma praised the poetic brilliance of O.P. Sharma Vidhyarthi, while Prof Veena Gupta highlighted his contributions to Dogri literature and environmental awareness. Welcoming the guests, Dr Javaid Rahi, Divisional Head, JKAACL Jammu, introduced Basant Geet Tawi Da as a collection of 70 Dogri and 70 Hindi poems addressing glacial retreat, deforestation, soil erosion, and pollution. In line with the International Day of Forests theme—’Forests & Food’—the event also featured a tasting session of herbal teas, sorrel snacks, and sweet basil beverages, promoting the revival of traditional foods and beverages. The event was conducted by Rita Khadiyal, Assistant Editor, Dogri, JKAACL.
