JAMMU, May 28: The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is set to receive an additional 200 electric buses by June 2025, following a proposal submitted to the Government of India (GoI) by concerned authorities.
Both Jammu and Srinagar cities are expected to get 100 e-buses each from the new batch. Currently, 200 e-buses—100 each in Jammu and Srinagar—are operating on various routes across the UT. However, officials noted that many areas still lack adequate e-bus coverage, and some regions remain without any public transport services.
“The Government of India sought details regarding the requirement of more e-buses for J&K, and we have submitted a proposal for 200 additional buses to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs,” said Devansh Yadav, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL), told Rising Kashmir.
Sources added that tenders have been floated, and the new fleet of 200 e-buses is expected to be delivered by the end of June 2025. The buses may be supplied either by Tata Motors or another manufacturer, depending on the tender outcome, Yadav further explained.
Electric buses were first introduced in J&K in January 2024, flagged off by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
To ensure sustainable operation and improved service quality, JSCL revised the fare structure last month, increasing tariffs by 7% in line with annual operational cost revisions.
Notably, the J&K government had earlier announced free rides for women on the e-buses operating in the territory, a move aimed at promoting public transport usage among women commuters.
