Sopore, Sept 02: Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh on Saturday said that the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir is progressing towards becoming a “terrorism-free region,” and the police are determined to tackle the challenge of drug-related issues vigorously.
“Jammu and Kashmir is on the path to becoming a terrorism-free region. We are proud of the fact that, by and large, Jammu and Kashmir is moving towards becoming terrorism-free,” he stated.
He said Sopore, once notorious for terrorism, is now terrorism-free. “Sopore was once known as a hotbed of terrorism, but today business is thriving everywhere here. Sopore is now terror free,” the DGP said.
The DGP emphasised that terrorism is currently at an all-time low, with a significant reduction in the number of terrorists.
“We are actively working to eliminate any remaining traces of terrorism in any form or location,” the DGP told reporters during an event at District Police Lines Sopore.
He also highlighted that the second most significant challenge for the police and other stakeholders is addressing the issue of drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir through joint efforts. After addressing terrorism, the next challenge is combating drug smuggling. “Our commitment is to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a drug-free region. We must transition from a terrorism-free Jammu and Kashmir to a drug-free one,” he stated.
Regarding two incidents involving the deaths of Sikh community members in Baramulla and Tral, the DGP assured that the police are actively investigating these incidents.
“There is no need to worry. FIRs have been filed, and investigations are ongoing. The case of the Sikh community member’s death in Baramulla has been handed over to the Crime Branch,” he explained.
Regarding preparations for Panchayat polls, the DGP assured that all necessary arrangements are in place, and the police will ensure smooth polls when they are conducted.
