JAMMU, DEC 26: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while inaugurating the open-air amphitheater at Bagh-e-Bahu, shared his vision of establishing Jammu as a prominent tourist destination. He stressed the importance of capitalizing on the region’s popular pilgrimage sites, especially the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, which attracts over a crore visitors annually.
“By encouraging just 15% of these pilgrims to explore other attractions in Jammu, we could witness an influx of 15 lakh tourists, rivaling the peak tourism years of Kashmir,” he remarked.
The event was attended by Minister Satish Sharma, DDC Jammu Bharat Bhushan, MLA Bahu Vikram Randhawa, Principal Secretary (Culture) Suresh Kumar Gupta, Secretary YS&S Sarmad Hafeez, Secretary Floriculture, Gardens & Parks Sheikh Fayaz, and DG Floriculture Jammu Jitender Singh.
In his address, the Chief Minister reflected on the evolution of Bagh-e-Bahu, recalling its transformation from modest beginnings to a hub featuring water fountains, an aquarium, and a sound and light show. “Today, this amphitheater adds a new dimension to Jammu’s cultural and tourism landscape,” he said, stressing the need to fully utilize its potential for diverse activities.
He urged the relevant departments to ensure that the amphitheater becomes a platform for various events, particularly for students to showcase their talents. “This facility should serve as a venue for school events, helping students hone their skills. It is vital that this amphitheater is not underutilized,” the Chief Minister added.
Reiterating his commitment to establishing Jammu’s unique identity in tourism, he mentioned several ongoing projects, including the much-awaited Jammu lake project, which is now nearing completion. “Jammu will have its own lake—a milestone that will significantly boost tourism. Such projects are key to putting Jammu firmly on the tourism map,” he stated.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of organizing regular programs at the amphitheater. “Events like today’s presentation by the Cultural Academy should become a recurring feature. I hope to see a well-publicized calendar of events, involving private organizations and schools, to ensure vibrant participation,” he added.
Acknowledging the seasonal nature of the venue, the Chief Minister expressed optimism that the amphitheater could be used for at least 4-5 months annually. On a lighter note, he shared that his residence across the river provides him with a direct view of the amphitheater. “From my balcony, I can hear the soothing sounds of the river and occasionally enjoy the sound and light show. I look forward to hearing the vibrant buzz of activities from this amphitheater as a regular feature,” he said, urging the department to ensure continuous engagement and wide publicity.
