Srinagar, May 2: Chief Executive Officer of the Smart City project, Owais Ahmad stated on Thursday that to avoid traffic congestion at Jahangir Chowk in Srinagar, a rotary is being constructed to facilitate seamless traffic flow in the city.
Speaking to reporters during his visit to Jahangir Chowk, the Commissioner of SMC, who also serves as the CEO of the Smart City project, mentioned that this project at the vital juncture would be completed within days. He stressed the need for people’s cooperation until the project’s completion, highlighting their past cooperation and expressing the desire for more in the future.
The officer explained that this crucial junction connects 10 roads, resulting in heavy traffic, and the implementation of rotation-based traffic flow would alleviate congestion, ensuring smooth vehicle movement. Additionally, he mentioned that the project would create more space on the roads, contributing further to seamless traffic flow in the city.
He reassured that work on the project has been ongoing around the clock and expressed confidence in completing it within the stipulated timeframe. Following its completion, inner work would proceed, followed by the macadamization of this stretch.
Responding to inquiries about the macadamization of other city roads falling under SMC jurisdiction, the CEO mentioned that blacktopping would commence in the next four to five days. Major city roads work will commence shortly, and coordination with other departments is underway to manage the process effectively.
Regarding the Smart City projects, the officer stated that 12 major projects are pending completion by the end of this month. In addition, there are still thirty to forty small projects to be completed. which are slated for completion within the next two months.
It is important to note here that the initial deadline for completing Smart City Projects in Srinagar was set for December 2023. However, failing to meet this deadline, a revised and final completion date has been issued by the GoI for all projects in the city.
