Islamia College organises National Conference on Innovations in Chemical & Material Sciences

Srinagar, June 25: Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Srinagar, in collaboration with the J&K Department of Science and Technology, organised a prestigious two-day National Conference on “Innovations in Chemical and Material Sciences for Sustainable Development” on the college campus from June 25 to June 26.

The event drew participation from eminent scientists, academicians, researchers, and students from across the country. The inaugural session was presided over by Shantmanu, Financial Commissioner (Additional Chief Secretary) to the Government, Higher Education Department, UT of Jammu and Kashmir, who served as the Chief Guest and Chief Patron of the conference. In his presidential address, Shantmanu emphasised the pivotal role of scientific innovation in addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and sustainable resource management. He highlighted the importance of fostering interdisciplinary research and innovation in chemical and material sciences to achieve the sustainable development goals. He also released the College Souvenir and Newsletter during the session. Professor Javed Naim Agrewala, a distinguished scientist and Dean Research at IIT Ropar, Punjab, delivered the keynote address, focusing on chemical innovation and material technology for environmental resilience. Abdul Majeed Bhat, Director Finance, Government of J&K (UT), graced the occasion and shared the dais with the Chief Guest. Other distinguished speakers included Professor Ramendra Pratap (University of Delhi), Professor Farukh Arjumand and Professor Sartaj Tabassum (both from AMU, Aligarh), and Dr Mahipal Yadav (University of Delhi). Prominent scientists, research scholars, and invited speakers from reputed institutions delivered technical talks on topics such as nanomaterials, green chemistry, catalysis, renewable energy, biodegradable polymers, and eco-friendly industrial practices. In her welcome address, Professor (Dr) Tehmina Yousuf, Principal of the host college, stated that the conference would bring together leading scientists, researchers, and policymakers to discuss the latest advancements in research and mitigation strategies for sustainable development.

Dr Sameer Kaul, Head of the Department of Information Technology, presented an overview of the college. Dr Abid Banday, Organising Secretary, introduced the conference theme and anchored the inaugural session. Over 30 research papers were scheduled for presentation across technical sessions during the two-day event, offering a dynamic platform for young researchers and postgraduate students to showcase their work. Interactive Q&A sessions during the technical segments further enhanced academic engagement. Dr Taulat Qayoom, Staff Secretary of the host college, expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, delegates and student volunteers for their contributions in making the event a grand success
