Jammu, Apr 07: M.P. Singh, a 1990 batch Indian Revenue Service (I.R.S.) officer, has been elevated to the position of Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, effective from April 1, 2024, by the Department of Personnel and Training and Central Board of Direct Taxes in New Delhi.
Singh, who previously served as Principal Commissioner of Income Tax in J&K and Ladakh, brings a wealth of experience, having rendered meritorious services to the state for over a decade. His tenure includes roles as Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner (Appeals), and the first Principal Commissioner of Income Tax in Srinagar.
With a diverse career spanning across Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, North Bengal/Sikkim, Gujarat, and Delhi, Singh has garnered expertise in handling Supreme Court matters for the Income Tax Department and has played a pivotal role in conducting parliamentary elections in Baramula and Budgam districts in 1996 heading more than 250 teams of the department from north-west region and Delhi. Singh is known for taking various social initiatives, outreach programmes for creating awareness for the environment and plantation..
Upon assuming office, Singh has directed his officers to prioritize resolving long-standing grievances of taxpayers in the region. He has ordered the release of bank accounts belonging to small businessmen and salaried individuals, emphasizing the importance of accurate tax compliance.
Singh has urged taxpayers to maintain accurate financial records and adhere to tax obligations, while also calling upon chartered accountants and tax professionals to conduct awareness programs and seminars. He believes such initiatives will foster financial discipline and prevent taxpayers from falling prey to misinformation.
Expressing gratitude to the media for its role in fostering tax awareness, Singh has encouraged taxpayers to reach out with their grievances or queries via email or visit local income tax offices for assistance.
“My tenure of J&K has been most challenging and memorable as I found people of this place warm, friendly, and enlightened,: Singh added.
In his endeavour to facilitate a conducive tax environment, Singh aims to harness the collective efforts of taxpayers, professionals, and authorities towards nation-building and minimizing litigation.
Meanwhile, Singh also extended Eid greetings to people of Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh.
