Srinagar, Sept 2: Even as heavy rainfall lashed parts of the Valley in recent days, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo on Tuesday said the administration was maintaining “round-the-clock vigil” and had kept all line departments on alert for the next two weeks to deal with any eventuality.
“The current water level is much below the alert mark, but all departments including revenue, police, and other line agencies have been instructed to stay on alert for 15 to 20 days,” Labroo told reporters, adding that advisories were being issued from time to time.
“Yesterday we cautioned people about gusty winds and advised them to stay away from cables and poles. Similar advisories will continue as required,” he said. The Deputy Commissioner said the administration was fully geared to tackle any crisis, with the Divisional Commissioner already having reviewed preparedness. “The whole administration is on alert. We are closely monitoring the situation at Sangam and Ram Munshibagh, and levels remain well below danger,” he added. Earlier in the day, Labroo visited Indira Nagar where he joined members of the Kashmiri Pandit community in Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. He said the peaceful conduct of Ganesh Chaturthi, Muharram and the Anantnag yatra this year reflected the “communal harmony and cultural richness of Srinagar”. He also said that under the Government of India’s Heritage Scheme, several temples, shrines and churches in Srinagar had been taken up for restoration and preservation as part of the Smart City Project. “All religious places with heritage value should be upgraded and preserved,” he said.
