Srinagar, Jan 8: Handwara police have successfully dismantled a sophisticated gang of cheaters operating an extensive honey trap scheme, victimizing people individuals North and Central Kashmir, police said on Monday.
The accused, whose activities spanned areas like Baramulla, Bandipora, Handwara, Ganderbal, and Srinagar, preyed on innocent people by deceitfully promising government jobs, orchestrating fraudulent marriages, and promoting fake inverter schemes.
Police said, “Posing as professionals such as doctors, engineers, and government employees seeking matrimony, the perpetrators manipulated their victims through various methods, accumulating substantial sums, particularly from vulnerable segments of society.”
The fraudulent activities included the promise of government jobs, sham marriage proposals, and a deceptive inverter scheme. In the latter, the accused, disguised as Engineers from the Power Development Department, tricked individuals into paying an advance of 4200 Rupees for inverters supposedly provided by the department.
Responding promptly to the issue, Handwara police registered Case FIR No. 01/2024 under relevant sections of the law at the Kralgund police station. The investigation is in its early stages, with authorities anticipating further arrests as they diligently work to dismantle the entire network.
Police urged citizens to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of offers or proposals, especially those related to jobs and marriages.
The Handwara police reassures the public that stringent actions will be taken against those preying on unsuspecting individuals, reaffirming their dedication to maintaining public trust and safety.
