Srinagar, Apr 14: Heavy rainfall drenched valley plains for the third consecutive day on Sunday while the higher reaches received fresh snowfall. The meteorological department has forecasted heavy rain, thunder, lightning and gusty winds during the next 24 hours at isolated places in the region.
Director MeT Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that rains lashed plains and light snowfall was recorded in higher reaches for 3rd consecutive day on Sunday.
“On Monday, weather will remain mostly cloudy with light to moderate rain, snow (higher reaches) at most places with possibility of heavy rain/thunder/lightning and gusty winds at isolated places,” he said.
Dr Mukhtar said that from April 16-17, he said, partly to generally cloudy weather is expected with light rain in plains and snow over higher reaches at few places.
“Similarly, from 18-20th April, partly cloudy weather with light rain or snow is expected at many places. Overall, on and off rainfall is expected in Jammu and Kashmir for next couple of days,” he said.
“Travellers & Tourists are advised to plan accordingly. Temporary water logging is also expected in few low-lying areas. There is also the possibility of landslides and mudslides besides shooting stones,” he added.
As per MeT data, Srinagar recorded a low of 10.0°C and maximum temperatures 11.5°C. Qazigund recorded a minimum of 9.4°C and 12.0°C as maximum temperatures. Pahalgam recorded a low of 5.7 °C and 10.6°C as maximum temperature.
Kokernag recorded a minimum of 8.6°C and 12.3°C as maximum temperatures, Gulmarg recorded a low of 2.4°C and 4.4 as maximum temperatures.
Meanwhile, Srinagar received 15.0 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours while Qazigund received 15.2 mm of rainfall, Pahalgam 32.4 mm of rainfall, Kupwara 11.6 mm of rainfall, Kokernag 8.4 mm of rainfall, Gulmarg 8.2 mm of rainfall.
Following inclement weather, the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) issued an avalanche warning in the higher reaches of two districts of Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours.
A spokesman said that an avalanche with a “medium danger” level is likely to occur above 2400 metres over the north Kashmir district of Kupwara and central Kashmir’s Ganderbal districts in the next 24 hours.
“People living in these areas have been advised to take precautions and avoid venturing into the avalanche-prone areas till further orders,” he said, adding that the authorities have also asked the people living in these districts to dial 112 for help given any emergency.
Due to incessant overnight rainfall, many parts of Srinagar city witnessed water logging. Following the inclement weather, a massive dip was witnessed in temperatures in the valley. There was increase water level in river Jhelum other water bodies in the region
A senior official at Irrigation and Flood Control Department said that water level had increased in some nallas and river tributaries in Kashmir but due to improvement the situation has largely improved.
He said that there is no alarming flood like situation as of now and people also need not to panic. Tributaries in south Kashmir are filled with rainfall water, but there is no situation of floods in the valley, officials added.
A traffic police spokesman said , “On Monday, subject to fair weather and good road condition, LMVs Passenger/Private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW viz Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa. However, HMVs shall be allowed from NAVYUG Tunnel (Qazigund side) towards Jammu after assessing the road condition.”
The spokesman said that the cut off timing for LMVs in view of single road at Dalwas:- (subject to change depending on road condition) from Nagrota (Jammu) 0600 hrs to 1100 hrs from Jakheni (Udhampur) 0700 hrs to 1200 hrs& from NAVYUG Tunnel (Qazigund side) 0600 hrs to 1100 hrs. No Vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timing.
Meanwhile, Mughal Road, connecting Kashmir Valley’s Shopian district with twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch, has been closed “till further notice” following fresh snowfall. They said that there was fresh snowfall at several places along the road including ‘Pir Ki Gali’, leading to the closure of the thoroughfare.
“In the view of fresh snowfall, continuous inclement weather and unfavourable weather conditions, there will be no traffic movement on Mughal Road from tomorrow onwards till further notice,” officials said.
