Srinagar, Apr 08: The Jammu and Kashmir Government is going to commission the Shahpur Dam this year to provide irrigation water facilities, benefiting thousands of hectares of land, in Kathua and Samba districts.
As per an official communication, the dam will ensure equitable access to water resources and will improve agricultural productivity in both the districts.
It further said that with a focus on enhancing household tap connections, the government aims to provide functional tap connections to all 18.36 lakh households in the union territory.
The ‘Har Ghar Jal’ initiative will certify the remaining 4000 villages to ensure access to clean and safe drinking water, it said, adding that the handover of 3244 Jal Jeevan Mission schemes to local Pani Samities, PRIs will enhance the operation and maintenance of water supply systems.
Major medium irrigation schemes and minor irrigation schemes are slated for completion, creating irrigation potential for thousands of hectares and benefiting numerous souls, it added.
It also said that flood control measures are also prioritized, with the completion of 302 flood control schemes aimed at reclaiming and protecting 3000 hectares of land.
Under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Har Khet Ko Pani’ and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development assistance, many schemes are underway to bolster irrigation infrastructure, it added.
