Jammu, Sep 10: To raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention, Psychological Counselling Cell of Government College of Education Jammu organised a special seminar on World Suicide Prevention Day observed annually on September 10.
As per a statement issued here, the programme was organised under the guidance of Principal of the College Dr. Jyoti Parihar. She applauded the initiative and highlighted the college’s ongoing efforts to provide counselling services and mental health resources for students. She said that education is not just about academics. It is also about building resilience, empathy and a strong support system. Dr. Ambica Kumari, HOD Department of Psychology and Convenor Psychological counselling cell was the Resource Person. She emphasized the importance of recognizing warning signs and building a supportive community. “Mental health should be a priority, not a taboo. Together, a safe space can be created where everyone feels heard and supported,” she said. “Your life matters. You are not alone. If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed, please know that there are people who care about you, who want to help, and who are ready to listen—whether it’s a friend, a teacher, or a professional counsellor. We must also remember that suicide prevention is not a one-day event. It is an ongoing effort that involves awareness, education, empathy and action,’’ she added.
The seminar, held at the college auditorium, featured expert talk, student testimonials, and interactive sessions aimed at educating the participants about the importance of early intervention, emotional support and destigmatizing mental health issues. The event also included a pledge ceremony where participants committed to being mental health allies.
