Jammu, April 26: A suspected gangster and drug smuggler was injured during a late-night police operation in the Miran Sahib area of Jammu after he allegedly opened fire on a police team attempting to intercept him.
According to police officials, the operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs about the movement of Abhineet Singh, also known as “Nagi,” who is reportedly wanted in more than a dozen criminal cases, including charges of attempted murder, rioting, and arms smuggling.
A team from Police Station Miran Sahib set up a checkpoint (naka) to intercept the suspect. When signaled to stop, Singh and an associate—both riding a motorcycle—allegedly tried to flee the scene and reportedly fired at the police.
Police said the motorcycle lost control during the attempt to escape. In response to the alleged firing and to prevent potential harm to the public, the police team returned fire in what officials described as self-defense.
Both suspects then abandoned the motorcycle and attempted to escape under the cover of darkness. A search operation was immediately launched.
During the search, one of the accused—believed to be Singh—was found injured in a nearby canal and was shifted to a hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been officially disclosed.
The second suspect managed to escape, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend him. Police have cordoned off the area and intensified search operations.
Authorities stated that further details will be shared as the investigation progresses.
