Srinagar, April 25: The University of Kashmir (KU) Friday concluded its two-day Earth Day event here which was organised by the department of Students Welfare (DSW) KU and the Department of Earth Sciences (KU) and was sponsored by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India (GoI).
The event brought together students from across the Kashmir Division, creating a vibrant space for awareness, creativity and dialogue around pressing environmental issues. The two- day event featured a series of engaging programs and activities, including a debate and a painting competition centred on the themes of climate action and environmental stewardship. Participants included university students and schoolchildren, all echoing the urgent need to protect our planet.
At the valedictory ceremony, Prof. Peerzada Sharif-u-Din, Dean Academic Affairs KU stressed the urgency of environmental protection, referencing the alarming rate at which glaciers are melting. “The environmental challenges we face today are real and intensifying. It is everyone’s duty to protect our shared home,” he said. Prof. Naseer Iqbal, Registrar KU emphasised the scientific perspective of sustainability. “Earth’s systems are delicately balanced, and pollution in various forms is causing serious disruptions to the environment. We must act now to restore ecological harmony,” he said. Prof. Pervez Ahmad, Dean Students Welfare KU highlighted the importance of engaging youth in meaningful environmental discourse. “Earth Day serves as a wake-up call. When we involve young minds in such initiatives, we nurture responsible future citizens,” he said. The Dean, School of Earth Sciences KU Prof G.H Jeelani reflected on the region’s changing climate, lamenting the loss of pristine natural resources and urging collective action to combat pollution and unsustainable practices. The event concluded with the distribution of awards and certificates to the winners and participants, leaving behind a renewed sense of environmental commitment among attendees.
