Under the aegis of Jammu and Kashmir Wushu Association and Jammu and Kashmir Sports council, a two days District Baramulla Wushu Championship was held at MTM foundation school here in Chandiloora Tangmarg.
More than 300 athletes from different schools and clubs participated in the championship held for three categories viz; sub junior category, junior category and senior category.
On the valedictory function, SDM Tangmarg and SDPO Tangmarg distributed prizes among winners.
In his speech, SDM Tangmarg Sameer Jan congratulated the District Baramulla Wushu Association for organizing the District Level Championship and providing a platform to the youth to channelize their energy towards sports.
SDPO Tangmarg Hilal Khaliq emphasized on shunning of substance abuse and conveyed that youth are the brand ambassadors of the society and it is their duty to join sports and earn name and fame for the country and the UT J&K and make the country drugs free.
Earlier, the championship was inaugurated by International Wushu medallist and secretary of Wushu Association Baramulla, Jabeena Akhtar.
Jabeena Akhtar told Rising Kashmir that the motive behind organising such events is to keep youth away from substance abuse and let them join sports and earn name and fame for the country and the UT J&K.
“We had three motives behind organising the event. One we want to engage our youth and children in sports and help them in shunning the drugs. Next we want provide them with a platform where they can perform and book their seats for national and international level competitions. We have enough talent but need is to channelise that talent,” Jabeena added.
She said that the wushu Association Baramulla is planning to hold a plethora of sports events in coming days with the help of sports council Jammu and Kashmir.
In the sub junior category, Zainab Amin of Aarifeen School of Excellence Baramulla won the gold medal in 26-30 weight category
In 22-26 weight category Mohammad Mashood of Rehmatul aalimeen school won gold while Zain ul Abideen of Aarifeen School of Excellence Baramulla won bronze.
Certificates were also distributed among the participants.
