Ganderbal, Sep 11: Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Jatin Kishore Thursday chaired a meeting to deliberate on the modalities for developing winter sports infrastructure at the world-famous tourist destination Sonamarg.
As per a statement issued here, the meeting held detailed discussions on the existing infrastructure and the additional facilities required to establish world-class winter sports infrastructure at Sonamarg. The DC requested the Managing Director, JKCCC, to formulate a comprehensive proposal in consultation with the Chief Executive Officer, Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA), identifying both short-term and long-term facilities needed for winter sports, for submission to higher authorities for approval.
In order to promote Sonamarg as a premier winter sports hub, the DC instructed the CEO, SDA to initiate measures for conducting winter sports events, skiing training programmes, development of an ice-skating rink, and notification of designated skiing areas so that skiers and tourists are well-informed about the available facilities. The DC also emphasized the need for advance preparations for the upcoming winter season and directed the SDA to prepare a detailed action plan for smooth conduct of winter sports activities.
