New Delhi, Oct 10: The Indian National Congress’s Central Working Committee (CWC) on Monday convened a significant meeting, addressing pressing national issues and outlining key resolutions to shape the party’s strategies moving forward. The meeting, as per a party statement issued here, covered a wide range of topics impacting the nation.
The CWC expressed its deepest condolences to the people of Sikkim and the Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong hills, profoundly affected by unprecedented floods and emphasised the importance of credible environmental impact assessments in vulnerable Himalayan regions. The CWC urged the Union government to provide necessary aid and declared the recent tragedy in Himachal Pradesh as a national disaster.
The CWC welcomed Bihar’s release of the caste survey results, highlighting the disparity between representation and population share. The committee emphasised the need for a comprehensive nationwide Caste Census, which it termed as essential for policies promoting social justice and inclusive development. The party criticised the Modi government for not releasing the 2011 Socio Economic and Caste Census data and not conducting a fresh Caste Census.
The CWC condemned the government’s raids on journalists and writers alleging the misuse of anti-terror laws. It expressed anguish over the continuing crisis in Manipur, saying the constitutional governance has collapsed there. The committee demanded the immediate removal of the chief minister and the imposition of President’s Rule to restore order in the state.
The CWC raised concerns about India’s economic situation, citing data showing a significant decline in the net financial assets of Indian households and stagnant real income growth.
The Congress Party called upon its members and supporters to unite for the upcoming state legislative assemblies and Lok Sabha elections. It also expressed dismay over the recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East, with a significant loss of lives. The committee reiterated its support for the rights of the Palestinian people and called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations to resolve the ongoing crisis.
