Srinagar, Dec 21: Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) president Altaf Bukhari made a fervent appeal to the GST Council, which convened its 55th meeting in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan under the leadership of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to reject the proposed GST hike of up to 28% on textiles.
Highlighting the potential impact of the hike, Bukhari in a statement expressed deep concern over the adverse effects it would have on traditional Kashmiri textiles, including shawls, crewel work and other handcrafted items. “Such a move would severely harm the businesses of these unique crafts and jeopardise the livelihoods of countless artisans who depend on this sector,” he said.
Bukhari added that the GST Council had demonstrated its support for traditional crafts and artisans in 2018 by reducing the tax on handmade carpets and similar items from 12% to 5%. He urged the council to exhibit the same spirit of compassion and magnanimity by rejecting the proposed hike.
“The proposed increase would deal a heavy blow to the artisan community, threatening the heritage and economy of regions like Kashmir that are known for their exquisite textiles. I humbly appeal to the esteemed members of the GST Council to protect the livelihoods of our artisans by not approving this hike,” the Apni Party chief added.
