Budgam, May 25: Police investigations into the murder of a minor girl in Gulwanpora village have pointed towards the involvement of a local resident, who has now confessed to the crime, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Budgam, Hariprasad K.K., said on Tuesday.

Addressing reporters, the SSP said Budgam Police collected substantial evidence within 36 hours of the incident, including digital, biological, and other material evidence, which led investigators to question several suspects.

“In the last 36 hours, we have been questioning multiple suspects. During the investigation, available evidence strongly suggested the involvement of a local individual,” he said.

The officer added that during sustained questioning, one suspect’s statements corroborated several facts already established by investigators. “When confronted with the evidence, the accused eventually admitted his involvement in the crime,” he said.

Police have also seized additional material evidence following the confession, while investigations are continuing to determine the motive behind the crime and whether any other individuals were involved.

Calling the incident “heinous”, the SSP said the crime was not merely against a particular family or locality but against society and the state. “It was our primary responsibility to solve this case, and that is why Budgam Police worked relentlessly to crack the case within 36 hours,” he said.

He further clarified that the investigation would continue despite the arrest. “Our investigation does not stop with the arrest of the accused. We will continue the probe until every aspect of the case is thoroughly investigated,” he added.

The SSP appealed to the public, especially residents of Gulwanpora, to cooperate with investigators and refrain from spreading rumours or unverified information on social media.

According to police officials, information regarding the disappearance of the minor girl was received at the Police Station Budgam around 10 pm on Friday, after she reportedly went missing from her residence during the evening hours. Following the complaint, FIR No. 139/2026 was registered under relevant sections of law, and extensive search operations were launched immediately. The body of the minor was recovered during the early hours of Saturday at a short distance from her residence.

Police warned that strict legal action would be taken against individuals found circulating prohibited content or spreading unverified information related to the case on social media.

“J&K Police is closely monitoring social media activities related to the case. People are requested not to share or believe misleading content and to cooperate with the investigating agencies,” a police spokesperson said.
