Leh, July 07: A worker of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) risked his life to rescue two civilians trapped in a massive mudslide along the treacherous Khalsar–Agham–Shyok Road in Union Territory of Ladakh. The incident occurred around 4:00 PM on Sunday near Nallah 2 at one of four critical water crossings on this high-altitude axis that links the scenic Nubra Valley with Pangong Tso. This vital route, maintained by 111 RCC under 753 BRTF of Project HIMANK, is often disrupted during summer months due to high discharge and sudden natural outbursts. As teams from 111 RCC were engaged in maintenance and diversion work following heavy flow in the Nallah, a sudden land cum mud-slide outburst blanketed approximately 500 metres of the road in debris, mud, and boulders, making the stretch impassable and extremely dangerous.Amid the chaos, a tourist vehicle carrying two civilians identified as Navritu Singh and Sabal Gupta got trapped in the mudslide. With water levels rising and the terrain unstable, the situation turned life-threatening.Without hesitation, Sapper Kailash, who was operating a dozer to redirect water channels at higher ground, spotted the stranded vehicle. Braving the dangerous conditions and ongoing slide, he rushed into the hazard zone, reached the vehicle, and rescued the two civilians one by one, escorting them to a safe area.Despite sustaining minor injuries during the rescue, Sapper Kailash successfully evacuated both individuals, who were later taken to the nearest Field Hospital at Partapur for medical care.Authorities praised the bravery of Sapper Kailash, whose courage under pressure ensured that the treacherous terrain did not claim innocent lives.
