In the scenic Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the district of Baramulla is experiencing a remarkable surge in tourism and economic activities following efforts to promote border tourism in the region.
Led by Dr. Syed Sehrish Asgar, the Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla, the concerted efforts of the LG administration and district officials have unearthed hidden tourist gems and transformed once inaccessible areas into thriving destinations, bringing joy to the faces of the locals.
The recent reopening of the Kaman Post, known as the Bridge of Peace, after its closure in 2018 due to terrorism, has been a pivotal step in attracting tourists. Previously restricted to high-ranking officials, the area is now accessible to the public with only an Aadhaar card for permission. With no recent reports of terrorism, officials are optimistic about this opportune time for public access. In just two months, more than seventeen thousand tourists from different states have visited Kaman Post, marking a significant increase in footfall.
One such hidden gem, Babagail village in the Boniyar area of Baramulla, has gained recognition as a village for border tourism. The government’s allocation of home-stays and support for local culture has made it an inviting destination for tourists seeking serene environments and breathtaking landscapes amidst the Himalayas.
Adventure enthusiasts and trekkers have been flocking to top sought-after tourist destinations like Baba Fareed, Kandi, Rustom Nambla (TV Tower), Dana Nambla, Nambla Waterfall, Bosiya, Copra Peak, Dudran, Dana Dudran, Chotali, Zulfiqar View Point, Bilal Abad Garkote, Machichurand, Lachipora Wildlife sanctuary, Limber Wildlife sanctuary, Ghati, Gabaywar, and Vijji Top in Uri subdivision in recent months.
Rafiabad area’s Ladua Ladoora has also emerged as a village for border tourism, with the district administration organizing a tourism festival to showcase its beauty and promote peace. Once a route for infiltration, Ladua now offers hope and optimism for the future.
The surge in border tourism has not only brought a boost in footfall but has also opened up avenues for employment and economic growth in the region. Dozens of trekking groups have explored the beauty of these no man’s lands, putting Kashmir’s wonders on display for the world to see.
Mund Daji witnessed its first-ever snow festival, organized by the district administration, to promote the area as a major tourist destination. The event received an overwhelming response and generated excitement for more festivals in the future.
These tourism initiatives have been instrumental in providing economic opportunities and fostering peace in areas that have witnessed violence in the past. With thriving home-stays, improved infrastructure, and a focus on adventure tourism and ecotourism, the Baramulla district is witnessing a resurgence in economic activities and an increase in employment opportunities for the local youth.
Border tourism in Baramulla has emerged as a beacon of hope and joy, transforming the lives of the people living in the region. The efforts of the district administration and the support of the government have paved the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for the district’s tourism industry.
