All India Inter-University Powerlifting Championship begins at KU

Event reflects national unity, youth resilience: Minister Sharma

Srinagar, April 04: To celebrate sportsmanship, national unity and determination, the University of Kashmir (KU) inaugurated the All-India Inter-University Powerlifting Championship 2025 at the varsity on Friday.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Minister for Youth Services and Sports, UT J&K, Satish Sharma, who graced the event as Chief Guest, praised the varsity for successfully hosting the championship and declared the event open.
“This powerlifting event is not just about physical strength; it represents the inner resilience and determination of our youth. The inclusion of separate competitions for men and women in this championship will set a new benchmark in promoting inclusivity and empowerment in J&K,” he said.
He further added “Youth engagement in sports promotes national integration, unity and helps keep them away from harmful distractions such as drug abuse and excessive screen time.” Organised by the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPES), KU, in collaboration with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the four-day event will see participation of over 1000 athletes from 160 universities across the country. Separate powerlifting events are being held for men and women.
Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, in her address, expressed pride in hosting the championship and extended her best wishes to all participating athletes. She also highlighted the University’s notable achievements in sports and its ongoing commitment to promoting athletic excellence.
“It’s a historic moment for our university. We are proud to bring together some of the country’s strongest and most determined athletes. This event reflects our commitment to inclusivity, equality, and sporting excellence,” she said. Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Kashmir, Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, Vice-Chancellor, IUST, Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, and Vice-Chancellor, Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. Mohammad Mobin, also spoke on the occasion and emphasised the importance of sports in building character, promoting physical fitness and national unity. They said such events are vital for encouraging youth to challenge themselves, stay healthy, and engage meaningfully with diverse cultures across the country. Earlier, in his welcome address, Coordinator DPES KU, Dr. Surjeet Singh, welcomed the guests and participants, and outlined the details of the event. The inaugural event was attended by key administrative officials, faculty members, and students from the campus. The championship will continue till April 07 and includes a series of events that celebrate the power of youth, strength, unity and fitness.
