Srinagar, Oct 11: After 9 years, the Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (LC&MA) has started dredging Batpora nallah in the west division city to increase the channel’s water flow.
Divulging the details, AEE LC&MA subdivision west Zahoor Ahmad Khan told Rising Kashmir that the decision to dredge this channel was taken to increase the water flow.
He stated that the dredging work started 25 days ago and would be completed in a few days. The department is planning to carry out dredging in many channels.
The officer went on to say, “We have already submitted the DPR for Brarinabal and the same has been submitted to the department for approval.” When the project is approved, work will begin on it.
Meanwhile, the people residing on the bank of Nalla Batpora told Rising Kashmir that after almost a decade, the department carried out the dredging in the locality.
Irfan Ahmad of Batpora said that the channel was full of solid waste and the foul smell was irking the bystanders. He said that the dredging of this channel was their long-pending demand.
Ahmad also urged the department to carry out the desalination of streams in the area on a regular basis to keep the areas clean. “Scores of people are living on the banks of the stream, and the dirty streams are giving them tough times.”
He has hoped that the LC&MA department will carry out the desalting in other streams also to keep the area neat and clean.
The Lakes Conservation and Management Authority also said that they are planning to execute the dredging in all streams and channels by this year.
A senior official of the department stated that in the coming months more small channels will be made clear, adding that the department will carry out cleaning processes across the city streams on a priority basis.
The department is also planning to carry out the massive cleaning process on various water bodies in the city and will also procure modern machinery for the cleaning of water bodies across the city.
